Kimono Labs Is Now In Palantir’s Pocket

Y Combinator-backed company Kimono Labs, has been acquired by Palantir Technologies, a data analytics firm. Kimono Labs websitemade the announcement regarding the acquisition, but the financial details of the deal were not revealed. According Kimono’s website, the company’s team will now join Palantir. Following the deal, Kimono Labs will put an end to its operation on February 29, 2016. This means that 125,000 developers who use Kimono will have less than two weeks to move to a different service and retrieve their data. All other personal data including names, email addresses, and passwords will be removed from Kimonolabs.com. Palantir, however, will have no access to data. Through a desktop app, users can still use the desktop version of the service. The free version will be available on OS X and Windows, but the service will not be a cloud-hosted solution. This app will work independently without any technical or customer support from the company. Thanks to Kimono there is no need to write any code to extract data. Kimono’s post regarding the acquisition stated: “The incredible talent and access to the world’s most important data problems – even if it meant no longer working on the kimono product. Our decision to join gives us unmatched support, resources and the ability to work on things we could not tackle alone as a small startup.” Founded by Ryan Rowe and Pratap Ranade, Kimono had raised $5 million in two funding rounds prior to the acquisition. Palantir, on the other hand, has raised $2.42 billion since its inception in 2004. The data analytics firm is now valued at $20 billion, compared to $15 billion in 2014.
