Introducing Meizu PRO 6: The Android iPhone From China

In case you haven’t heard of Meizu, it is another Chinese powerhouse functioning in the smartphone industry with Xiaomi and Huawei as its archrivals. Its flagships that got mainstream attention include the Meizu MX5, m3 Note, PRO 5 and now the PRO 6.

The PRO 6 was supposed to be announced later this year, but the company decided to steal some limelight from Huawei, which was revealing its P9 smartphone.

The Meizu PRO 6seems like an iPhone 6S, the only thing that gives it away is the home button. The camera placement on the back is different, but the PRO 6 still tries too hard to mimic an iPhone.

It’s an Android phone at heart with a 5.2-inch AMOLED display. The design is a metal unibody with intriguing antenna lines on the back of the phone, which do make the PRO 6 look pretty. It is possibly the only feature that standouts in an otherwise ever-expanding Android roster, however, it was also plucked from the iPhone.

It houses a MediaTek Helio X25 processor, notoriously known for being a deca-core chip, and Meizu claims that the PRO 6 will be the first smartphone in the market with a 10-core processor. It’s supported by 4GB of RAM with 32GB and 64GB storage options. As far as the camera department is concerned, Meizu packs a Sony 21.1MP sensor in the rear with f/2.2 aperture and laser-aided focusing.

The selfie camera is 5MP with f/2.0 aperture. Other features on the PRO 6 include USB Type-C for charging, a fingerprint sensor called mTouch, and disappointingly a 2,560mAh battery. Meizu could have at least tried packing a 3,000mAh to compete with its closest rivals. While designing the PRO 6, it looks like the folks at Meizu tore down the iPhone to figure out what they could replicate.

The sound chip is from the same company that caters to iPhones. Even the newest introduction of a pressure-sensitive touchscreen, which Meizu is calling 3D Press, has Apple’s 3D Touch written all over it.

It’s possible that the company’s target audience is not the general Android category, but those iPhone users who are looking to switch to an iPhone look alike that runs on Android instead, and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. The PRO 6 32GB variant costs ¥2,499 ($387) and the 64GB variant costs ¥2,799($433). Good luck getting the phone in the US though.
